Digital Banking Safety Tips Every Member Should Know

February 24, 2026

Robins Financial Credit Union is dedicated to our mission to be Member Focused, Financial Partners, Community Proud. We empower our members with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions and achieve their financial goals.

Digital Banking has made managing money more convenient than ever. From checking balances and transferring funds to paying bills and depositing checks, members can handle most financial tasks anytime, anywhere. While these tools offer speed and flexibility, they also make it more important than ever to stay vigilant about protecting personal and financial information.

At Robins Financial, safeguarding our members’ information is a top priority. We invest in advanced security tools and monitoring, but digital safety is a shared responsibility. By following a few best practices, members can significantly reduce the risk of fraud, identity theft, and unauthorized account access. Here are some essential Digital Banking safety tips every member should know.

Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Your passwords are the first line of defense against unauthorized access. Weak or reused passwords make it easier for fraudsters to break into accounts.

A strong password should:

  • Be at least 12 characters long
  • Include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters
  • Avoid easily guessed information such as birthdays, family member/pet names, or common words

It’s also important to use a unique password for Digital Banking that you do not use for any other platforms, including email, social media, or other websites. Consider using a reputable password manager to securely store and generate strong passwords.

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring more than just a password to log in. This may include a one-time code sent via text, email, or generated through an authentication app.

Even if someone obtains your password, MFA makes it much harder for them to access your account. Members should enable MFA on Digital Banking, email accounts, and any financial apps whenever possible.

Be Cautious of Phishing Attempts

Phishing is one of the most common tactics used by scammers. Phishing involves fraudulent messages that often appear to come from trusted sources, such as your credit union, retailers, or government agencies, and attempt to trick recipients into providing sensitive information.

Red flags you should watch for that may indicate a phishing scam include:

  • Urgent or threatening language
  • Requests for personal information, passwords, or verification codes
  • Unexpected attachments or links
  • Slight misspellings or unusual sender addresses

Please keep in mind that Robins Financial Credit Union will never ask for your Digital Banking login credentials, full Social Security Number, or any one-time passcodes, especially via text, email, or social media messaging. We do not need this information to verify your accounts. When in doubt, do not click on links or respond. Instead, contact the credit union directly using a trusted phone number.

Keep Your Devices and Apps Updated

Software updates aren’t just about new features; they often include critical security patches that protect against newly discovered vulnerabilities.

To stay secure:

  • Enable automatic updates on your smartphones, tablets, and computers
  • Keep your Digital Banking app updated to the latest version
  • Install antivirus and anti-malware software on personal devices

Using outdated software can leave devices exposed to cybercriminals who exploit known security gaps.

Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Financial Transactions

Public Wi-Fi networks, such as those in coffee shops, airports, or hotels, are often unsecured. Hackers can intercept data transmitted over these networks, putting sensitive information at risk.

When accessing Digital Banking:

  • Use a secure, private Wi-Fi network whenever possible
  • Avoid logging into financial accounts on public computers
  • If needed, use a trusted virtual private network (VPN) for added protection

Taking these precautions helps ensure your information stays private.

Monitor Accounts Regularly

Regularly monitoring your accounts is one of the most effective ways to detect fraud early. Members should review transactions frequently through Digital Banking and set up account alerts.

Set your account alerts based on:

  • Transaction amount & type
  • Account balance
  • Login or password changes

If you notice anything suspicious, report it to our team immediately. Quick action can help limit potential losses and prevent further unauthorized activity.

Protect Personal Information

Fraudsters often rely on stolen information to access your accounts or open new ones with your identity. Protecting your information both online and offline is essential.

Some best practices include:

  • Shredding sensitive documents before discarding them
  • Limiting what you share on social media
  • Being cautious about who you provide personal details to

Even seemingly harmless details, such as your pet’s name or favorite vacation spot, can be used to guess security questions or passwords.

Know What to Do If Fraud Occurs

Despite best efforts, fraud can still happen. Knowing how to respond quickly can make a significant difference.

If you suspect you or someone you know is a victim of fraud:

  • Contact our team at Robins Financial immediately
  • Change your passwords and review your most recent transactions
  • Monitor your credit report closely for unusual activity

The sooner suspicious activity is reported, the faster action can be taken to protect your accounts.

Digital Banking offers convenience, but security should always come first. By following these safety tips and remaining alert, members can reduce risk and enjoy peace of mind knowing your finances are protected.
